The main root is má or mó, more, with the negative, but the exact explanation is not easy; "no more than"(?). amháin =a-(apo)+màin, *mani; Greek $$Gmános, spärlich, $$Gmonos (St.Z.).II.mhàin, a mhàinonly, Irish amháin, Early Irish amáin. It has been divided into a prefix and root form: a-máin, the latter being parallel to Dor. Greek $$Gmw$$nnos, Greek $$Gmónos, alone. Cf. Old Irish nammá, tantum, "ut non sit magis" (na-n-má, Zeuss).
